Basten Debut - Round 4

A very special occasion for the Club against Sydney University on the weekend saw second year colt and Lindfield junior Henry Basten make his 1st grade debut for the Highlanders.

All 1st grade debuts are special, particularly for front-rowers who are still eligible for Colts, however, this 1st grade debut is extra special for the Club as Henry is the son of Sandy, who played for the Highlanders in the 90’s.

Sandy has been described by former teammates as a blonde-haired tight-head prop who joined Colts in 1989, initially more cuddly bear than scrummaging machine. After honing his skills in the dark arts, he graduated into grade in 1991 and he made his 1st grade debut in 1995. He held the esteemed position of Club Captain in 1996, from which he led a tour to the rugby powerhouse nations of Andorra, Spain and Italy. After 215 games in the engine room for Gordon, he hung up the boots.

Henry has represented Gordon Juniors since under 10s. Coming through The Kings School 1st XV, in 2021 and 2022 he was selected for Combined GPS 1st XV and then for NSW Schools and NSW u18s. He quickly established himself upon joining 1st Colts in 2023 and was a literal driving force upon which the team built its success last season. Henry was selected in the NSW u19s squad that competed in the National Championships at the end of 2023.

The Club looks forward to seeing Henry’s long career in tartan and beyond.
