The club would like to acknowledge the passing of one of its great coaches and mentors in Gordon Ogilvie. Gordon came to the club in 1986 and coached the colts for a few years before moving through to coaching grade in the 1990’s under Alec Evans and Chris Hawkins. Gordon continued to be the club coach for many years and mentored a number of players during that successful era.
One of those players was former Wallaby Stirling Mortlock who had this to say about Gordon.
“Gordo had such a massive positive impact on so many young players coming through the ranks at Gordon Rugby for over 25 years at the club. He was a mentor and positive influence to so many players of our vintage, personally he had the biggest impact of anyone in my life, both on field and off field. I know I wouldn’t have achieved anything close to what I did without his guidance, advice and sound counsel throughout my journey.
He loved everything about our great game and more importantly taught us all about the values of Rugby. He will be sorely missed by all.”
Gordon had a famous saying “Gentlemen, Saturday is Rugby Day” and only this week sent an email to a number of his past players saying “This Saturday is Gordon Rugby Day”.
We pass our condolences to his wife Jill and two sons Cameron and Russell.
