It is with great sadness the club reports the passing of Frank McMahon, Gordon Rugby Football Club Life Member, on 14th August 2018, aged 87 years.
Frank was a tireless, understated worker who loved the club and all who passed through it. Norm Tasker reflected “I first ran into him in 1974 when I coached a Gordon Under 16 team on tour in New Zealand. His son Stuart was a player in that team and Frank toured with us, a terrific guy in every way. In his later roles with the senior club, he was one of those blokes who just did the job, without any thought of plaudits, his whole endeavour steered to the welfare and well-being of everybody else. A very good man gone”.
Frank was elected a Life member of the Rugby Club around the same time as the late Bill Hearl, father of Peter and Graeme Hearl. Both reflected on Frank as a truly lovely, humble man who did so much for the club behind the scenes, who was great servant of the club over many years. Part of the post WW 2 generation who shaped the club in the 60s, 70s and 80s coming out of the juniors.
Club President, Matt Glascott, heartedly endorsed these sentiments, adding further that he was “more importantly a great bloke”.
He was simply a great man, and a very loyal and dedicated servant of the club over many years. Whilst his passing is a great loss (not only to Frank’s family but to the club and his wider circle of friends) we all, no doubt, have many happy and fond memories of Frank which will stay with us all.
Frank is survived by his wife Gwen, and his extended family including his son Stuart and daughter Gai and their families.
A celebration of Frank’s life was held at the Magnolia Chapel, Macquarie Park Crematorium on Thursday, 23rd August. Flowers were sent on behalf of the club with the message “In memory of Frank McMahon who gave so much to Gordon Rugby. Always fondly remembered.”
Frank’s contribution to Gordon Rugby can never be underestimated. A Gordon man through and through and as such will never walk alone!
Vale Frank on behalf of a grateful Club. May you rest in peace.
