But Wait There’s More!

You may have thought that the Mighty Highlanders had hung up their kilts for the season, not so! Gordon has one team competing in the 2011 finals, the Mighty 2nd Grade Colts who play this Sunday the 11th of September at Forshaw Park, Sylvania at 1:25pm

The 2nd Grade Colts finished the season 5th on the ladder with 13 wins, 8 losses and a draw. That draw came last weekend when they played West Harbour at Concord Oval, the game ending 19-19. The Highlanders may have to face Wests yet again, with the Pirates finishing the season in 6th position only 1 point behind the Highlanders.

Gordon win the lineout

The 2nd Colts play their first semi final against Eastwood on Sunday at Forshaw Park. Eastwood are coming off a strong win over Northern Suburbs last weekend, 45-19. It’s not an impossible task Gordon triumphed over Eastwood in round 7, 26-21. However last time they met the Woodies handed the Highlanders a 50-14 drubbing. That being said it was an away game for Gordon and it was a fair few rounds ago (round 18).

The result didn’t go the way of the 2nd Grade Colts in round 18, however their Coach Tommy Forde stresses the team is a lot stronger now, “we weren’t mentally switched against Eastwood last time, we had a really poor preparation and the boys simply weren’t there to play”. The 2nd Grade Colts side has had a relatively good preparation for Sunday, “we are mentally switched on this time, we’re gelling, we have a set plan for Saturday and everyone knows what they have to do and as for last weekend” says a fired up Forde. The only blemish on Gordon’s preparation is the result last weekend against West Harbour, “we tried out some lower grade players to see if they were ready for 2nd grade and the result came from some of that experimentation not working so well” explains Forde.

Colts 2nd Grade Captain Steve Hayter is really happy with how the team is playing over the last couple of weeks, “we are gelling as a team a lot better, we have a really different squad to the one that played Eastwood earlier this year”. It should be a exciting game this weekend with Eastwood having some exciting big players in the forwards and a number of Gordon players possessing some genuine pace, “I know how I would like us to play on the weekend, I would really like us to play some expansive footy and keep the ball in hand, we have some good pace and footwork in the backs”. Forde and Hayter echo each other in stating that the biggest improvement to the team is their ‘commitment’, the Captain and Coach both agree that the boys have been gelling as a team and the combinations are working really well.

It is going to be a cracker of a game SUNDAY (the 11th). Kick off is at 1.25pm at Forshaw Park, get down there to see Gordon’s lone finals bound team, the mighty 2nd Grade Colts.

No it’s still wrong. The start of the article says Sunday, but then later it says Saturday. Geez they’ll be tired if they play two days in a row. No wonder the prop in the photo looks worried ;)
